For the birds

I was flipping through an old Martha Stewart Kids magazine the other day and noticed this project which I thought Ethan might like. If your kids enjoy making messes in the kitchen this will satisfy their daily sticky quota without ruining a batch of people food.
First, gather your materials:
1/2 c. peanut butter
1/2 c. vegetable shortening
1 c. each of rolled oats and cornmeal
1/2 c. of flour
2 paper cups and a mesh bag (save them from your onions or cherry tomatoes)

Mix peanut butter and shortening in a medium bowl...stick them in the microwave for about a minute on high.

Stop and take a picture:

Add the rest of the goodies and mix. I also added some birdseed...cause, duh! Pour/scrape into 2 paper cups and think about possibly tasting it...(but don't!).

Let the cups cool and harden in the fridge, then peel off the cups, put them in the mesh bags and hang them up somewhere where the birds might come....and check them incessantly throughout the day. (No takers yet--even the birds insult our cooking!)

Thanks, Martha!

Looks like Ethan had fun, it looks like something alan would enjoy doing, if it involves making a mess and being in the kitchen its for him. Thanx for the idea.

I was thinking this would be a cool summer project for me'n'the kids, but then I remembered we don't have any trees.

Did you go to Ikea?

No Ikea yet...think I'll wait til the mob scene dies down a little. I saw some of the crazyness on the news yesterday...it was like Christmas in June or something!

You mean there were no birds camped in tents outside your house waiting for the grand opening of the swanky Le Bird Seed?
