All through my pregnancy with you, I held my breath. Every time a nurse was unable to find your heartbeat and wandered off slowly to find a doctor, I closed my eyes and turned myself to stone. It happened a lot.

The morning before you were born we headed to the hospital because I couldn't feel you moving. I tried everything- the orange juice, lying on my side. Nothing. As we drove to the hospital, I was almost able to convince myself that you were already dead.

Just as we pulled in to the sprawling Beaumont campus, I felt it. A kick, a punch, something. And I knew with sudden clear joy, I wasn't leaving without you. The car seat would have a baby in it when we left the hospital this time.

I'll never forget the sound of your first cries. Loud, insistent wails. Such a contrast to the silent delivery before yours. Relief and joy and sadness. And so much joy.

Drew. You are creative and fun. You make us laugh almost every day. You don't really like hugs but you occasionally endure them for my sake. You've loved your little sister since you first put your hand on me and felt her move. You are a little bit of a mystery.

We love you and are so glad you're here.

Happy birthday!

Drew and I watch fit people run by

The Brooksie Way half-marathon and 5K shuts down our town for a few hours every October. The route passes very close to our house and every year I mean to check it out.

Drew and I watch on Tienken

So, this morning I tried to motivate the boys to get out of the house with me. I announced there would be a PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST! SO MUCH FUN! And a PRIZE, even! A PRIZE for the best photograph!

Ethan demanded to know what the prize would be. All I could offer was a lollipop left over from his party favors. Not good enough for him.

But Drew was excited about getting his "own" camera and came along eagerly.

Watching the race

He took over 200 pictures.

We hung out around mile 8, clapped, cheered, and watched the hordes run, walk and stagger by.

I noticed Drew was really getting into his photography. He even got some shots of me.

Camera wars ensued.

People taking pictures of people taking pictures

Drew took at least 20 shots of paper cups and maybe as many of his own feet.

I was impressed by some of his pictures, though. And I loved watching his enthusiasm for the process grow.

Walking back from the race, Drew said, "Let's do this every year!"

Winter bug hunt

I recently stocked our "Chore Store" (story for another day) with items I grabbed from the $1 Target shelves. Some really great bug hunting paraphernalia. This week, Drew was able to "buy" the bug net with his well-earned chore dollars.

Of course I didn't really think about the detail that bugs would not be available for several more weeks.

No matter. We made our own bugs.

We cut them out and hung them with fishing line from the ceiling.

The preparation was a lot more satisfying than the actual execution. I hadn't really thought through what would happen after we hung the bugs. The boys took turns swinging away with Drew's net. (Of course I didn't get a decent picture of this) It didn't take long before all the bugs were "caught" and/or demolished.

A pack rat goes digital

If you have children, you have learned to ruthlessly discard stacks of "art" on a daily basis. Unless, of course, you prefer your house looking like an episode of Hoarders.

Eighty percent of the projects I'm tripping over are easy enough to part with.

And then there's the occasional charmer. This morning's masterpiece brought to you by Drew:

"Daddy's Brain. Out for a walk."

There are a lot of possible solutions out there for organizing and displaying the real treasures. (I worked so hard and got them all from the same site)

I've been wanting to try one I first saw here. Genius! Scan in your favorites, combine into one piece to have printed (snapfish or shutterfly, perhaps), frame and hang. AND THROW AWAY THE ORIGINALS!

Here's my work in progress:

No cheesy pirate jargon, I promise.

A pirate birthday party: a mother's dream come true. I am mostly serious about that. It's got to be one of the easiest party themes to work with. There are just so many possibilities.

Although when you give some thought to the bloody, barbaric origins of these characters, still around today, it does give you pause. How have we managed to romanticize violent criminals? Hmm. Will children of the future have "Crips and Bloods" birthday parties? Wear red or blue, dawg!

That said, I wasted no time wallowing in guilt. Instead, I got to work on some fun activities and decorations. A treasure map, a fabric garland, pin the patch on the pirate game, drawstring loot bags and a pirate craft. All things made very doable by the diminutive list of Drew's friends. We invited three boys. Two made it. It was relaxed and fun for all.

Keith and I came up with a fun game where the kids had to hunt for clues hidden outside, using his telescope and binoculars. The clues were letters, color-coded to make up a word which spelled out the location of hidden treasure. It was a big hit.

Truly the best part was later that evening when Drew said sincerely (and apparently, out of the blue), "Thanks for my party, Mama." Later, I learned Ethan had coached him to thank me but I was still impressed. There's hope for my little outlaws.

A is for Apple

With high hopes of encouraging Drew's recent, albeit rather late-blooming, interest in letters, I decided we would work together on making an alphabet book. Looking through my photos, I've found pictures to represent most of the letters.

Any ideas for Q, X and Z?

Cheesy, but true

Hey, here's an idea I actually had all by my own self! Think of that. It just popped into my head the other day in the grocery store. You know those little overpriced bags of cheese in various shapes, that kids(mine, anyway) seem to love? Well, how about killing two birds with one cookie cutter? Uggh. Anyway, it was a fun little activity for Drew which resulted in a bag of cheese shapes for all to eat!

I just bought a block of cheese, cut it into several layers and grabbed some small cookie cutters.

I still have a little rooster and cat cutters I used as a girl.

Drew was happy to help.

Drew coined it

Knittle (nit'l)
v.
1. To make (a fabric or garment) by intertwining yarn or thread in a series of connected loops either by hand, with knitting needles, or on a machine.
2. To form (yarn or thread) into fabric by intertwining.

"Mama, watcha gonna knittle with that?"

"Are you knittling now?"

A boy and his blanket

This morning I found the first hole in Drew's beloved, blue blankie. It was easy to fix since it was found early. This blanket has been with him since birth and is almost three years old. It was made for him by this dear lady and I have to admire her workmanship because in spite of being dearly loved and constantly picked at, it has held up well.

I could say the same of Ethan's first blanket and constant accessory for his first three years (thanks, Aunt Liz!)...In fact, he still sleeps with it every night. He was a little rougher on his as you can see:

(this picture was taken two years ago before I attempted some major repairs)

Rather than joining in on the NaBloPoMo fun this year (not that I ever have but I did think about it), I think I'm going to take a little blogging hiatus. I'm sure I'll keep posting pictures on flickr and facebook. You just never know.

5 Things I'm loving

1. Taking a walk with Drew on a perfect fall(ish) day, hunting for leaves. We found one bright tree near the park and gathered a few of the best at its feet. Throughout the morning I could hear my Grandpa Murray singing, "Come little leaves, said the wind one day; come to the meadows with me and play." Grandpa, with a song or poem for every occasion.

Drew and I saw two deer watching us in the woods. They turned and ran when they knew they'd been spotted. We looked for caterpillars all through the milkweed but found nothing.

2. This book.

Beautiful photography, inspiring and practical ideas. It did not disappoint. In fact, I have my first project picked out and maybe we'll get to it this weekend sometime.

3.Drew's new shoes.

The poor kid was sick again this week and, at this point, is diagnosed with a recurrent vomiting disorder, with no answers in sight. But, he gets over his sickness quickly and is back to the usual mischief in no time. New shoes always help. (Or is that just me?)

4. A couple miles from us, in between Dunkin Donuts and Burger King, there sits a humble farm stand. Local freshness under a tent. I stopped by today with just a few dollars and was happy with all I brought home.

5.New life to an old project. Many months ago I fell in love with a pattern I saw on Ravelry. Sadly, it was a crochet pattern and I'm not real experienced with crochet but it looked pretty simple so I started out. I even bought some special yarn for it. Somewhere along the way, I became less than inspired, probably because I had to look up instructions each time I picked it up.

I spied the yarn in my stash the other day and became excited about the possibilities once again. If it looks a little odd, feel free to tell me what I'm doing wrong. I love the colors and the idea of creating something warm for the cold days ahead.

Things that make you spit out your food

Ethan and Drew have been on a Star Wars kick lately. At dinner tonight, Keith decided to test Drew's knowledge, asking him, "Who is Boba Fett's father?"
Drew gave it a few seconds thought before he answered, "Probably Jesus."

It's a long one

Drew was able to come home yesterday...thanks everyone for your prayers and sympathy. We are still waiting for some test results but he seems to be feeling much better.

Wednesday morning when he woke up coughing, gagging and throwing up, I wasn't all that worried because he has had several strange episodes since January where he couldn't keep anything down for several hours and then, suddenly, was all better. Of course I was a little worried about this developing pattern and began to wonder if it might be a food intolerance. The last time it happened, though, was April and I hoped the problem might have resolved.

This time, however, the vomiting just wouldn't stop and actually began to increase in frequency as the afternoon wore on. Finally, after hours, I called his pediatrician who recommended we head straight to the ER. His vomit was becoming quite colorful and his cries of pain ever louder. Turns out, stomach acid is neither tasty nor soothing to the skin.

I pulled Ethan and Drew out of their beds, prepared them as quickly as I could and we headed out. We arrived at the ER around 8 pm and were ushered into a small, curtained-off area, never dreaming we would spend the night there. Poor Drew continued to throw up, his mouth bleeding, for two more hours while various people stopped by, poked and prodded and asked the same questions over and over. Around 10 pm they put in an IV and he was able to get some fluids. That's when his vomiting stopped.

Ethan and Adam were wide awake and ready to run laps, climb mountains, tear down Gorbachev's wall and eat it but sadly were asked to sit still and STOP DOING THAT! Well, Adam was not asked to sit but I did silently beg for him to at least become sleepy like any normal baby might, hours after his bedtime. Instead, he squirmed and kicked in my arms until 1 am.

I sent Keith some messages but was not able to contact him and my battery began to beep.

Doctors ordered x-rays and blood tests and we all traipsed around the hospital to the x-ray room. They asked if I wanted to stand next to Drew during his pictures and I said that of course I would but, you see (don't you?), I have these other kids right here and what to do with them? Oh. So, Ethan, Adam and I squeezed ourselves in behind the little window in the x-ray room with a technician who apparently was not aware that ten-month old babies cannot give high-fives and aren't really amused by surgical gloves blown up like balloons with a face drawn on it. I appreciated the effort though.

Around midnight the doctor told us that they wanted to admit Drew. The x-rays looked good but they wanted to do further GI studies to rule out something like an impacted or twisted bowel. His white blood count was high as well.

I explained to them that my husband was out of town and I didn't have many options but I really wanted to stay with Drew. Everyone was very understanding and went off with promises of "working things out". In an hour or so, a new nurse or doctor would come by and try to convince me to leave Drew in a room with another family since there were no private rooms. I said that I would rather take him home with me or sleep outside his room in the hall if need be. "Oh well, I understand. We'll see what we can do."

Around 1 am, a very kind ER nurse decided to take matters into her own hands and rolled in another cot for us. We were surrounded by bright lights and loud noises but I was grateful to be able to stay. I lay at the end of both beds, listening to the sounds of "environmental services" mopping a few feet from me. Someone yelled a joke to a co-worker. A mother of a nearby patient told her sad life-story to an orderly. New doctors came in around 3 am, and asked us all the same questions.

6 am we were magically admitted to a room and trekked across the hospital to get there. More doctors, same questions, more tests. Drew had had enough. He begged for water and to get OUT. They did a blood draw and an hour later realized they needed to do another one. In between his cries, he slept.

Finally, it became clear we would be there for many hours, if not another night, so I called Keith on the hospital phone and he was able to head back. Which was surely a good thing. He was able to take over and stay with Drew that night.

In terms of a diagnosis, the GI studies (swallow and x-rays) did not show a problem. His white blood cell count came back down. Thursday night they did a blood culture to test for celiac disease. Results are pending. Hopefully, we'll have some answers soon.

Drew warms up to "bebeh" Adam

The beauty of the cheap, compact Canon is its accessibility. It helps me catch snippets of silliness here and there.

Please tell me why the nose is always so fascinating when the camera is rolling.

A new favorite

I have a long list of tutorials and patterns I've found online that I've bookmarked with high hopes. I was able to find a few stolen moments here and there last week to finally complete a hat for Drew, my little hat boy.

I used an old pair of favorite corduroys I found in a box (size 8!! Was I ever a size 8??) and the pattern from this great tutorial.

I'm so happy with the way it came out, I can hardly believe I made this. Even Keith was impressed which is no small feat.

Drew is 2!

We used to think that Ethan was a stubborn, difficult toddler. Along came Drew and showed us what fussy really meant. I have to say, in spite of its terrible reputation, the age of two is when it starts getting good around here. Already, things have been improving in toddler land. Within the past month, Drew's language has taken off and he is suddenly affectionate (!) and cuddly!! Where did that come from? He gives out kisses freely, even occasionally to his nemesis, baby Adam. His sense of humor is blossoming and he gives us lots to smile about.

Happy Birthday Drewser!

He wants to be the baby

I let Drew play in the crib today. He recently graduated to the bottom bunk and has made the transition well but I often catch him climbing on the baby's bed. He wanted to bring his blanket in and quickly took over his old territory. He even donned the baby's hat and goofed around for some pictures.

I've been a bit overwhelmed by the thought of Christmas gifts and lists and all the running around this year. I'm not planning many handmade items but a couple things keep sneaking in. Here's a little peek of one I'm working on.

**********COMING SOON: A report on Adam's head. He might get to wear a helmet! Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
