The rest of the story

Ethan woke up this morning raving about his "cool party". Eight of his friends were able to come and most of their parents were around and really helped me out. In spite of all my efforts, I realized throughout the day I still have a lot to learn about this birthday party stuff. Got to brush up on the old cake decorating skills. Must buy more than two prizes for "pin the spiderman to the web" game in case almost every child pins it correctly!

Of course none of these things bothered Ethan who was thrilled with his friends, the games, his gifts and the miracle of turning FOUR! Very exciting stuff.

Can't forget Spiderman of course. We walked the kids out front and around to the backyard to "look for a special present" for Ethan, while Spidey was getting situated. When he was ready, we went into the backyard and the kids quickly spied him up in the tree.

At first, Ethan seemed to have barely any reaction and watched, frozen, with a hint of a smile on his face. Then, Spiderman dazzled us all, swinging ever so gracefully to the ground where he made his way over to the kids with a present for Ethan. At that point, the mix of emotions on Ethan's face was almost painful to behold. It was quite a combination of fear, wonder, worry, and excitement.

Spiderman hung around for a few photos and questions from the kids before running off to catch some bad guys, or something like that. From left to right: Ella, Shiloh, Grant, Hunter, Spidey with the birthday boy, Andrew, Christopher and Julia. Kathryn and Drew didn't make the shot. Again, thanks to Amy, Brandi and Janelle for sharing their pictures. I'll put more on Flickr soon.

I can't resist posting a little clip of Ethan playing the "pin the spiderman" game. He got pretty disoriented and basically pinned his own self to the wall, poor thing.

I'm glad you were born, too, Ethan!

Hey- guess where I was when I left the message on your machine last night? Bass Rocks! Cool, eh? Amy n' Lindsay and I were driving back from the wedding, using the scenic route...

Oh my STARS!

It gets better each time I watch it.

SO funny! I love Ethan's honesty in confessing that he can see a little down at the bottom and his prompt obedience in averting his eyes from that naughty spot...to his own detriment.

Folks, Liane and Spidey throw a mean par-tay! Don't let her fool you with her modesty. They got good skeels!

Man, he got Spidey for his birthday?!?

He is never, ever gonna forget that! That is just so cool...

I wonder if Ethan's S-man fascination will wax or wane after this surprise appearance? I prayed that Keith would be safe rappelling out of that tree - didn't want any Darwin awards at the birthday party!

Wicked cool party! Your Spidey was WAY better than the Spidey at Grant's party. Grant and Ella had a great time...thanks for inviting us.
Where is the mid-air shot? I'm glad the rest of the pics turned out well.
How did returning the costume go? I recall her security measures being more thorough upon return.

Oh my word... I laughed SO hard at Ehthan so forcefully nailing his target. Sorry, kiddo.
What a fabulous party! I'm so impressed. I was completely convinced that that was the real Spidey. Who else could have box-like triceps like that?

I didn't know the Donkey had retired---or is Spiderman just competing with him?

Way to go Ethan!

What a devoted Dad to don a costume and swing down GRACEFULLY in front of everyone!!

Amy--yes, the return experience was more than a little creepy...and although I thought the action shot of yours was awesome, Spidey felt he looked deformed in it...

Cowpoke--tell Lanche that we are thinking only of humane treatment for donkeys and all creatures by replacing the classic pin the tail game with spiderman.

Let me just say that I can't WAIT till you have a daughter and she wants a Barbie-themed birthday party! The prospect of "Barbie" swooping down from the tree in the back yard pretty much sent me into gales of laughter when I considered it at work today!

Could parental love possibly run that deep?

Time will tell...
