In Michigan the DMV is called Secretary of State, as in, go on over to the Secretary of State and get your license renewed. Bizarre! Is it a midwestern thing or has anyone else heard of this?
People in southeast Michigan tend to think that New Hampshire is populated by rednecks. People in southern New Hampshire think that Michigan is populated by rednecks. What does that make me?
When we first moved here, I was perplexed and annoyed by the "Michigan left" but now I think it's a pretty good idea.
After living here for almost four years, I still haven't seen the two most spectacular Great Lakes, Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. I hope to change that soon.
Michigan is second only to Florida for the most deaths and injuries from lightning strikes in the nation.
If you refer to soda as, well, "soda", rather than "pop" you may get some strange looks here.
I've been told by numerous Michigan natives that I have a "Canadian accent"?!
I think that's aboot enough for today, eh?

After living in Michigan for 17 years I never thought I had an accent (said with a very short a).Then I moved and visited MI and walked into a restaurant and I couldn't believe my ears! Yeah it sounded redneckish! But then again people in MI will actually acknowledge your presence unlike in New England! :> Never heard of the Secretary of State though!

Condoleeza Rice gives out driver's licenses?! :)
HA! I was just thinking today when I was talking to you that you had a canadian accent and that I wondered if that must be normal for New Englanders but was just going to ask John so that if I asked you you wouldn't laugh at me!!!?? Ha!
I've gotten the Canadian accent thing too from a number of random people/nationalities. And apparently I sound Estonian in Russian.
Go figure...
Hope you and the boys are doing well!
"Canadian" accent here too! Lots of very assorted people have told me this. Guess it's the way we say "out"? Oh well, I love the Canadians, so that works!

Ditto with the Canadian accent comment...Although when I lived in Georgia I remember someone thinking I was Swedish! Light hair, blue eyes, and strange accent. Yikes. Sweden!? At least Canada is on the same side of the ocean!
