This is weird

In the past few days, I seem to have developed, for lack of a better word, cravings. Now, I've never had really odd or extreme pregnancy cravings, just more of an appetite for most anything edible.

But lately, I've felt the oddest desire to somehow consume all things toxic. Well, mostly toxic fumes. Don't worry, I haven't given in but the weirdest things will pop into my mind and I will practically drool over them in my head. Things like turpentine, shoe polish and deisel fumes. I'll be reading a book and phrases like "oil soot" will pop out and make my mouth water. I am not making this up!

Last night as I was thinking about all this, I somehow remembered a weird chemical handsoap we used to have growing up. It was really strong stuff meant to cut grease and had a very distinctive smell...Cant remember the name...something like GoJo?? I wanted to sniff it.

What is wrong with me? Is it some extreme version of Pica where people feel the need to consume objects like chalk? Is it some sort of mineral or vitamin deficiency brought on by pregnancy? Someone diagnose me quick before I send Keith out for a delicious can of paint thinner.

We still use Gojo, it's the best. Not for lathering though.

Hey, I think I remember Gojo. and Hey, is that
Pat, our mother that just wrote that? Doesn't sound like something she'd say though.

I could send you some bird suet that they use to make
Christmas pudding? Is that toxic enough?

A different Pat, of mystery and intrigue...
Mmmmm suet...equally disgusting but too natural.

I don't have a diagnosis for you, except that this problem is apparently not limited to pregnancy. I used to get cravings for Pine-Sol in Bible School, and whenever I or someone else used the stuff I would find myself in an alarmingly euphoric state.... So if you just can't restrain yourself any longer, do some deep cleaning.

Mmmmmm...Pine Sol....

I think somehow this must be linked with that phenomenon of wanting to leap from high places (or, in Bible School, of having the almost uncontrollable urge to stick one's hand in Bridget when the mixer is on high). Scary.

Melissa - when I was in Bible School, Katie Adams got her hand caught in Bridget, and for anyone in the room, it would have forever quelled the urge to do so voluntarily! But along w/ wanting to jump from great heights or smell strange smells, I've always wanted to attack the shoulders of the person sitting in front of me in church... b/c how unexpected and funny would that be??? :)

Our neighborhood has an entrance road that splits right or left. But straight ahead there's a house. And every time I'm driving down the entrance road, I stare at the house in front of me and wonder, "What if I didn't turn, but just drove straight into that house?" So far I've resisted the temptation, but only because I don't want to answer three hundred rapid-fire "What did you do, Mama? What did you do?"

I've always liked the smell of diesel fuel. As for actually craving it... chalk it up to pregnancy. It works.

This post and all these comments just completely weirded me out.

Is this like some hidden female thing or something? Should I be worried for you all? Or just leave it alone and hope it goes away? :)

Ha, ha...be afraid, be very afraid. Keith thought it was a little horrifying as well.

What? It's a real phenomenon, DJ. Don't you remember "vagrant thoughts" from your Bible School training?

Liane, glue sticks are my sniff-o-rama of choice...but they're non-toxic, so it's okay. Hope you overcome your weird cravings! :O)

ah yes, vagrant thoughts... and Bridget. I must say that getting my hand cut in that wretched machine produced a morbid train of thought every time I had to use Bridget after that- I was sure that I was going to get my hand caught again. I felt inevidable- fated to be. Thank God it wasn't really.

maybe you should but a parent-proof lock on the cleaning cupboard until the baby is born.

Lindsay! I'll never feel at peace again in church, that is, as long as I'm sitting in front of you!

I know what it's like, lj! When I'm oil painting sometimes I stop to stare at the paint thinner and just want to gulp it down. Is definitely a weird thought.

Pine-sol is my cleaner of choice, also. Mopping the kitchen floor on Fridays at Fairwood is such a treat.
Antifreeze intrigues me also, because it's pretty and is supposed to taste good.

Rubbing alcohol... mmmmm.

But only when I was cleaning the white board...
