I am venturing into uncharted territory, braving the unknown and entering the world of sourdough bread making! It's a wild ride, so far.
I have no idea what I'm doing but I do have the power of the internet and its many confusing, even conflicting, carefully detailed instructions. I randomly chose to follow these.
Actually, I'm in the easy stage of simply adding a little flour/water to the mixture every 24 hours after disposing of some of the old. Just the right amount of work for life held hostage by a virus that keeps on giving. By the way, do you remember the awful pain of childhood ear infections? Well, neither did I, until last night. Agony. Parents, medicate your children.
Anyway, here is what my starter looks like now. Do you think my sponge is ready for proofing? Yeah, I'm getting the lingo down. So far, pretty simple. After all, as the instructions say, "People who didn't believe the Earth was round did this for millenia." I can do this. Wait...the earth is round?

Yay! I do love me some good, home-baked sourdough. Feel free to holler if you have any questions. Also, check out "Local Breads" by Daniel Leader for some awesome inspiration and general sour dough factoids.
Thanks Emma...you were my original inspiration. Can't wait to use my brotform!
I've always wanted to try bread making, but I can live vicariously though you :) I hope your ear feels better!
I'm big into the yeast dough field...but haven't tried starter dough for years...I think I'll shake things up and try it again! Thanks for the re-newing my interest in sour dough! There's nothing like the yummy taste and chewy texture!
OH yeah and I forget, Keith please help me on this, does the earth rotate round the sun or is it vice versa?
So how did it turn out? I adore sourdough bread, especially super sour sourdough. Yummy.
Shari,
I keep meaning to update...My first try did not go so well. I think I jumped the gun and used my starter too early. I'm going to try again when we get back from our trip.
